A walk over the Hudson.

It had rained heavy most of the night but started to clear after breakfast. We drove 30 minutes south and parked on the west side of the Hudson River at Highland to join the Walkway Loop Trail. We first walked by the river and railway to give us views of the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge and Mid-Hudson Bridge.

We crossed the Mid-Hudson Bridge. Hazel enjoyed listening to the bridge music (music that had been recorded by a musician playing parts of the bridge, sounded a little like a steel band).

After walking through Poughkeepsie we joined the transformed 1.3 mile long Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge (Walkway Over the Hudson) used by walkers, joggers and cyclists. The bridge forms part of a cycle network with plans to provide a cycle route from Canada to New York.

We finished the afternoon with a visit to Minnewaska State Park Preserve and a walk around Minnewaska Lake.

Guess what, yes another waterfall. Oh and a Lighthouse!

Rain was forecast for later today so we thought it best to stick to short hikes. As I was researching this trip one of the first waterfalls I came across was Kaaterskill Falls so though it was only right that we should pay them a visit.

After lunch we took a short nature trail out to Saugreties Lighthouse along sandy flats and wooden boardwalks. The Lighthouse is build on a sandbar that protrudes out in to the Hudson River. There are 2 rooms of the Lighthouse that are rented out on a B&B basis but fully booked months in advance.

It was a lovely walk and we didn't need to take up the offer of wellies as I'd checked tide times before we set off.

The forecasted rain arrived just as we returned to the car. After visiting the wine and liquor store we returned to Woodstock.

Heading to Woodstock.

After an enjoyable Saturday night in Auburn it was time to move on again. The next town we passed through was Skaneatales, we spent about an hour wandering on the lake shore and through the town.

As we drove through the Catskills Mountains we came across the Delaware & Ulster Railroad and pulled over for a short break to watch the steam locomotive shunting coaches around. They had just finished the train excursions for the weekend.

We eventually arrived in Woodstock and took it easy for a while in the sun.
